Let’s get moving into the future
We’ve had the pleasure of joining a thinktank recently with some of Australia’s brightest minds, and the conversation was around challenges our industry faces.
Our big challenge is working on making sure that councils:
1. Plan a skatepark approach across an entire city, not just at random
2 .Plan for where skateboarding is heading as a sport, and building venues to cater for grassroots coaching and competitions
3. Work with key stakeholders so they aren’t left behind and spending large volumes of cash on parks unfit for future purpose.
The Lismore skatepark, designed and constructed by Convic Skateparks, had input from the community, broader community, Skate Australia, Australian Skateboarding Federation, current professional skateboarders, Professional skateboard tours, coaches and our crew.
The park has shade and power in strategic positions for judging and hosting events that, with careful design, provides shade for onlookers on a day to day basis and administration areas for events, this also can be fit into the natural design of the park, and on most occasions, doesn’t add any further costs to the construction.
Now, Back on topic sorry.
Skateboard leagues, coaching programs, and community activation are all reliant on public facilities. with close to 50% of Australia’s skateparks coming to end of life, the decisions made in the next 3-5 years will decide how communities are shaped and how the skatepark sports thrive or dive.
We were fortunate enough that one of the members of the thinktank is in fact, a bit of a philanthropist and secondly. has a love for sport.
They have made a generation donation to us, and we’ve thought carefully about how to best use it.
Tell us the end of the Story!
So we’ve thought about this alot, and the priorities we see are:
1. City Strategies to cover as many facilities as possible
2. Skatepark audits to put maintenance plans and rebuild plans in place.
We have budgeted carefully, and we are able to do 10 City Council Skatepark Strategies and 10 city skatepark audits.
These will be heavily subsidised for up to 10 councils, provided the council has 10 or less skateparks. (if you are in the vicinity eg 11 or 12, reach out anyhow. )
How we will make best use of funds
Some Snapshots around skateparks
A basic guide around skatepark audits
Repair or rebuild guide
Key information on why your region needs to involve more stakeholders in new skateparks
What now?
These subsidised audits and strategies are first in best dressed, and to give you an idea of subsidising, in some cases, the audit costs will be 10X cheaper than some skatepark Audits and strategy costs between 2-4 x Cheaper.
Audits will give you a full snapshot of the current condition of your facilities, with recommendations for repair and upgrades.
Strategies for your city will cover:
1. Implementation of an overall facilities plan, which takes into account, national, state and local planning for the sport.
2. Consultation with key stakeholder in and out of the region, including NGOs.
3. Best practice information for all future new builds.
To express interest in being one of 10 subsidised strategies or audits in Australia, simply fill out the expressions of interest below. Note that if your region is planning on having both, please select the one most urgent for you and tick the checkbox if you are interested in the latter. *Note regions that adopt both a strategy and an Audit will be subsidised event further.
We have access to over 250 people on the ground, however, in some cases, travel costs may need to be incurred.
